Showing 7 causes
Oral allergy syndrome
Your immune system mistakes proteins in the raw fruit for pollen proteins you're allergic to. This causes a localized reaction, making your throat feel itchy.
Specific fruit allergy
You have an actual allergy to a specific protein in that fruit, triggering an immune response. This could cause an itchy sensation as your body reacts.
Latex-fruit syndrome
If you're allergic to latex, similar proteins in certain fruits could cause a cross-reaction. This leads to itching or tingling in your mouth and throat.
Histamine intolerance
Some raw fruits contain histamine, which your body may struggle to break down. This could lead to a buildup causing itchy symptoms in your throat.
Sensory nerve irritation
Certain compounds in raw fruits might directly stimulate sensory nerves in your throat lining. This could trigger a false alarm perceived as an itch.
Malic acid irritation
Malic acid in some fruits could be a mild irritant for sensitive throats. This might cause a scratchy or itchy feeling after eating them raw.
Minor astringency reaction
Tannins or other compounds in some raw fruits could cause a temporary drying or puckering sensation. This could sometimes be interpreted by your nerves as an itch.
